Food Allergy Testing

We offer both food allergy and food sensitivity testing. A food allergy is an immediate reaction of the immune system that can occur within minutes of consuming the reactive food allergens. This reaction can create a wide range of allergic reaction symptoms like hives, sneezing, wheezing, or even anaphylaxis. A true food allergy (type I hypersensitivity or immediate reaction) is usually mediated by an IgE-specific antibody.

Food sensitivities, on the other hand, often cause delayed reactions up to a few days. Food sensitivity testing tests for IgG and IgA-specific antibodies to foods.

Patients who meet the following criteria may want to consider food allergy testing:

• A family or personal history of allergy, asthma, eczema, hives, or hay fever

• A past food allergy as a child or are currently allergic to one type of food

Additionally, people with the following symptoms may want to consider food allergy testing:

• Hives and rashes

• Itchy mouth

• Nasal congestion or running nose

• Vomiting, nausea, or diarrhea

• Swelling of the lips, tongue, or throat

• Shortness of breath or wheezing

• Trouble swallowing

• Anaphylaxis
