True Story Of How Exercise Saved My Life

May is National Mental Health month. Many of you know, I became a widow after not even a year of marriage. I was only 29 years old. I went from the dream marriage, house and meeting my soul mate ( that term is a bit overused, but when it happens to you it is very real) to selling my dream house, moving back into my parents house and working at a place where I was not really digging. So why am I telling you all this? Because I want to tell you a true story.

After selling the house and saving a bit of money, while I lived back at my parents. Let me step back a minute here. If you do not know my Dad, he is tough. Love him to death, however he kept asking me for updates on the house. Every time I walked in the door, he would say " Meg what is going on with the house, did it sell yet?" After a few months, it sold. Guess what I came home to that night? A note on the fridge from my Dad stating how much I owed him for rent, utilities, electricity, food etc. I remember, going up to my old bedroom and balling.

Next, I bought a condo. My Dad helped me with the down payment. ( I think I still owe him that money ). Anyway, trying to make a long story short here. I was very depressed. I woke up one morning to an empty bottle of wine. I was shocked that I actually consumed an entire bottle of wine, by myself to boot. NOT GOOD. Not how I wanted to live my life. I heard a voice say to me " Go to the gym." I went to the gym that day and never looked back. Exercise was my Prozac. I started:

  • Sleeping better

  • feeling better overall

  • My depression resolved ( endorphins increase)

  • Anxiety improved

  • Feeling Stronger

If you are down or depressed, seek help from a mental health counselor. Please know that whole healthy food and exercise saved my life. I was in a very dark place. I had two choices. Make the best of this pretty shitty situation or have a pity party for the rest of my life. I will be discussing this on my iHeart radio show Harmony With Food. You can listen live @ Harmonywithfood.com at 11 AM / EST this and every Saturday. You can also listen to my podcasts @ Harmonywithfood.com

Let food and EXERCISE be your medicine. It worked for me! It can work for you too!

XO

Meg
