Chronic Inflammation: Is Your Gut Trying to Tell You Something?

The Gut-Brain Connection, Functional Nutrition Testing, and the Clues Your Body May Have Been Sending for Years
Have you ever walked out of a doctor's appointment knowing something still felt wrong?
Your labs came back fine.
You were told to sleep more. Stress less. Drink more water. Exercise. Relax.
Meanwhile, you're exhausted.
Your brain feels foggy.
Your stomach is bloated.
Your joints ache.
Your sleep is off.
Your mood has changed.
Maybe you're eating better than you ever have, and the weight still refuses to budge.
This is exactly why I wanted to talk about chronic inflammation.
I call it Inflammation Nation.
We live in a country surrounded by ultra-processed foods, food dyes, soda, high-sugar diets, artificial ingredients, alcohol, chronic stress, and chemicals throughout our food supply.
All of those pieces can enter the conversation when we're looking at the gut, the microbiome, the immune system, and chronic inflammation.
And chronic inflammation does not always announce itself with obvious pain.
Sometimes your body whispers.
Sometimes it whispers for years.
The question is: Are you listening?
What Does Chronic Inflammation Feel Like?
When people hear the word inflammation, they often picture swelling, redness, or an injury.
Chronic inflammation can show up very differently.
It can be associated with symptoms such as:
Exhaustion
Brain fog
Bloating
Weight-loss resistance
Joint discomfort
Skin issues
Mood swings
Anxiety
Poor sleep
Digestive problems
Feeling wired and tired
These are some of the complaints I hear from people who come to https://harmonywithfood.com.
They know something has changed.
They know they don't feel like themselves.
They simply haven't connected all the dots yet.
That is where I begin asking deeper questions about food, digestion, the gut microbiome, oral health, food sensitivities, micronutrients, lifestyle, and other individual factors.
And depending on the person, functional nutrition testing can give us another layer of information.
Instead of immediately assuming that everyone needs the same diet or supplement routine, testing gives us an opportunity to look more closely at what may be happening inside your particular body.
Your Gut and Brain Are Talking to Each Other
Your gut is often called the second brain.
Your digestive tract contains an enormous community of microorganisms known as the gut microbiome, and your mouth has its own microbiome too.
These tiny ecosystems are involved in digestion, immune activity, and processes connected with mood and brain function.
The gut and brain communicate through pathways that include the vagus nerve, hormones, and microbial metabolites.
This is the gut-brain connection.
When the microbiome becomes imbalanced, people may feel changes throughout the body.
That can include:
Irritability
Anxiety
Low mood
Difficulty concentrating
Brain fog
Fatigue
Sleep problems
On the Harmony With Food Show, I shared the story of a client who struggled with daily brain fog and mood swings.
We ran a gut microbiome test, an oral microbiome test, and a food sensitivity test.
We found significant imbalances.
Over the next several months, we worked through my six-step methodology using personalized food, supplements, and lifestyle changes.
Her clarity and energy improved dramatically.
That is one reason I am so passionate about looking deeper.
Could Functional Nutrition Testing Help Connect the Dots?
At Harmony With Food, I don't want you randomly guessing at what might be happening.
Depending on your symptoms and health history, we may look at areas such as:
Gut microbiome health
Oral microbiome health
Food sensitivities
Micronutrients
Short-chain fatty acids
Inflammatory markers
Digestive enzymes
Fat malabsorption
Yeast or fungal overgrowth
Other gastrointestinal markers
Some microbiome testing can look at dozens of markers.
That information gives us something concrete to assess.
Then we interpret what those findings may mean within the context of your symptoms, food intake, lifestyle, and personal health journey.
That's where testing becomes useful.
A test by itself is simply information.
What you do with that information is the next step.

Test, Don't Guess
Walk through a grocery store, open social media, or watch a few nutrition videos and you will quickly find people telling you exactly what you should eat.
Eat avocado.
Use olive oil.
Take curcumin.
Avoid lectins.
Eat fermented foods.
Go vegan.
Take this probiotic.
Use this supplement.
The information is endless.
And after a while, people become completely overwhelmed.
This is why I say:
Test, don't guess.
Your genetics are unique.
Your microbiome is unique.
Your lifestyle is unique.
Your history is unique.
Your food sensitivities are unique.
Your nutritional needs are unique.
This is the philosophy behind the BioUnique Boutique Collective.
BioUnique means your body deserves an approach designed around you.
We can use functional nutrition testing as one piece of that process and then build a personalized nutrition strategy based on what we actually find.
That could include microbiome testing, food sensitivity testing, micronutrient testing, and other assessments depending on the person.
Then we take those results through my six-step methodology.
We assess.
We interpret.
We implement.
We track progress.
We adjust.
That gives us a process instead of another nutrition rabbit hole.
Could a “Healthy” Food Be Working Against Your Body?
This is one of the most fascinating parts of personalized nutrition.
I once worked with a client who told me:
“I've been on them all.”
She meant diets.
She had tried diet after diet, lost weight, regained it, and continued looking for another plan.
Eventually, we ran a food sensitivity panel.
Two foods surprised her.
Eggs and soy.
She considered both healthy and ate them regularly.
We adjusted her food plan, added more diversity, and continued through my six-step methodology.
Over time, her brain fog, bloating, constipation, and other symptoms began improving.
Experiences like this are why I don't love universal lists of “good foods.”
You may hear that a food is anti-inflammatory.
That recommendation can still require personalization.
If your body is reacting to that food, your plan may need to look different.
How Do You Know Which Foods Are Right for You?
This is where food sensitivity testing may become part of the conversation.
You may think you're doing everything right.
You may be buying the organic vegetables, preparing the salads, eating the eggs, adding the smoothies, taking supplements, and following every piece of advice you've been given.
You still may not know what your individual body needs.
A food sensitivity panel can give us one set of clues.
Microbiome testing can give us another.
Micronutrient testing can help us examine whether your supplement plan reflects what your body actually requires.
I use these tools as part of a larger process.
My six-step methodology is designed to help us move from assessment into implementation so that you're doing something useful with the information we uncover.
What Foods Can Support Gut Health?
There are foundational foods that can support a healthier gut environment for many people.
Fiber can help feed beneficial bacteria.
Polyphenols found in berries, herbs, spices, and foods such as olive oil can support the gut.
Omega-3 fats participate in inflammatory pathways.
Fermented foods can also be useful for some people.
Those may include:
Kefir
Kimchi
Sauerkraut
Pickles
Kombucha
And yes, eating more fruits and vegetables can be a wonderful place to start.
I think most of us could improve somewhere.
Small changes count.
Progress counts.
You do not have to completely overhaul your entire life overnight.
At the same time, adding vegetables may only be the beginning of your health journey.
Your individual food sensitivities, microbiome, micronutrients, digestion, genetics, and health history can provide a much bigger picture.
Sometimes Your Gut Needs an Oil Change
I use this analogy with clients.
Think about everything your gut has experienced.
College.
High school.
Years of eating on the run.
Convenience foods.
Antibiotics.
Alcohol.
Stress.
Sleep deprivation.
Old eating habits.
Maybe you've completely changed the way you eat now.
Your gut still has a history.
Sometimes I say:
Your gut may need an oil change.
That means looking at what's happening today.
What does your microbiome look like?
How are you digesting food?
Are there enzyme issues?
Are there bacterial imbalances?
Are there food sensitivities?
What nutrients does your body need?
Are you taking supplements because your body needs them, or because you heard somebody recommend them?
These are the questions that move us toward precision nutrition.
Where Do You Start With Functional Nutrition Testing?
You may be thinking:
“Okay, Meg. Which test do I need?”
That is exactly why I offer an initial conversation.
Some people may benefit from beginning with a gut microbiome test.
Someone else may need to look at the oral microbiome.
Food sensitivities may be part of the picture.
Micronutrients may be worth examining.
For another person, we may explore obesogens or other environmental exposures.
There isn't one test that automatically fits everyone.
There also isn't one supplement plan that belongs in everyone's kitchen cabinet.

Chronic Inflammation and Weight-Loss Resistance
Chronic inflammation also enters many of my conversations about weight-loss resistance.
One of the most frustrating things someone can say to me is:
“Meg, I'm doing everything right. Why won't the weight move?”
Maybe you've counted calories.
Joined programs.
Eliminated entire food groups.
Bought supplements.
Worked out harder.
Tried every diet your friends recommended.
And you're still looking for an explanation.
Weight is complex.
Muscle mass influences metabolism.
Gut health can influence how you feel and function.
Food sensitivities, metabolic disturbances, lifestyle factors, and micronutrients may also be part of someone's individual picture.
This is why a generalized instruction to eat less and exercise more can leave people incredibly frustrated.
People need better information.
When You've Tried Every Diet
Weight-loss resistance is one of the reasons people eventually find their way into my programs.
Many have spent years cycling through different plans.
They're exhausted.
They're confused.
They've consumed so much nutrition information that they no longer know who to believe.
Inside the BioUnique Boutique Collective, we focus on personalization.
We can use functional nutrition testing to investigate factors associated with concerns such as:
Weight-loss resistance
GI imbalances
Metabolic disturbances
Fatigue
Brain fog
Feeling wired and tired
Then we use those findings as part of the six-step process.
This becomes your plan.
Your results.
Your body.
Your journey.
I Know What It Feels Like to Know Something Is Wrong
I lived through my own version of this.
Years ago, I was calling in sick to work.
I was experiencing serious anxiety.
I was dealing with GI problems.
I was told I had IBS and essentially needed to deal with it.
I knew I needed to dig deeper.
More than 15 years ago, I reached out to a functional medical nutritionist.
That decision changed the direction of my own health journey.
I started looking at my diet, food sensitivities, microbiome, and other individual factors differently.
I have not had the GI issues I once experienced since.
My own experience became part of the reason I am so passionate about this work today.
Your Doctor Hears You. Are They Listening?
This may be the biggest question I want you to think about.
Does your doctor hear you?
Many people who find me say they feel rushed.
Dismissed.
Minimalized.
Their labs are normal.
Their symptoms continue.
They walk out knowing the conversation isn't finished.
One client I'll call John experienced an especially serious version of this.
He developed excruciating hand pain.
He sought medical attention again and again.
He described seven ER visits, two primary care visits, and two urgent care visits over approximately two and a half months before a severe infection was finally identified.
He required hospitalization and IV antibiotics for more than a month.
After treatment, he was still exhausted.
Eventually, he reached out to me.
His testimonial has always stayed with me because of the language he used.
He said I listened.
And he felt heard.
That's powerful.
Another client I'll call Mary had spent much of her life bloated and uncomfortable.
She thought that was simply how she had to live.
After testing, we discovered sensitivities to dairy and gluten.
We adjusted her diet and supplements according to her individual needs.
She later reported more comfortable digestion, more frequent bowel movements, better-fitting clothes, and a 17-pound weight loss.
She said she wished she had contacted me sooner.
Different people.
Different health journeys.
One common experience:
They knew something wasn't right.
Your Body Has Been Sending You Information
Your body gives you information every day.
Energy is information.
Digestion is information.
Sleep is information.
Mood is information.
Bloating is information.
Brain fog is information.
Joint discomfort is information.
Weight changes are information.
The goal isn't to become afraid of every symptom.
Become curious.
Ask questions.
Pay attention to patterns.
Look deeper when a problem continues.
Be proactive about your health.
Feeling neutral should not automatically become your new normal simply because you've felt that way for a long time.
Functional Nutrition Testing Can Help Build a Roadmap
I sometimes describe nutrition testing as a GPS for your nutrition journey.
Before you create a useful route, you need to know where you're starting.
That is how I approach my work through the BioUnique Boutique Collective and my six-step methodology.
We can gather information through testing.
We assess it.
We interpret it.
We build a personalized food and supplement strategy.
We track how you're responding.
We adjust as needed.
This is a process.
There is no magic wand.
And I don't want there to be one.
I want you to understand your body better.
I want you to know why you're making changes.
I want you to become a more informed and proactive participant in your healthcare journey.
What Can You Do About Chronic Inflammation Today?
Start somewhere.
Add more whole foods.
Increase fruits and vegetables when they are appropriate for you.
Look at how much ultra-processed food you're eating.
Look at alcohol.
Look at stress.
Look at your sleep.
Pay attention to digestion.
Think about how often you're eating on the run.
Think about your history with antibiotics.
Notice how you feel after meals.
Then ask yourself one more question:
Do I actually know what my body needs?
If you have been struggling with chronic inflammation, weight-loss resistance, GI issues, brain fog, fatigue, joint discomfort, poor sleep, or that wired-and-tired feeling, you may need more information.
That is where functional nutrition testing may help us dig deeper.
Could Functional Nutrition Testing Be Your Next Step?
If you've been reading the Harmony With Food blog, listening to the Harmony With Food Show, or following me online and thinking, “I know I need to do something, but I don't know where to begin,” begin with a conversation.
You don't have to decide which test to order by yourself.
You don't have to build a supplement routine from a webinar.
You don't have to keep bouncing between nutrition trends.
At Harmony With Food, we can discuss your symptoms, your health history, your current nutrition, and what you've already tried.
From there, we can explore whether testing for the microbiome, food sensitivities, micronutrients, or other areas may be useful.
Through my six-step methodology and the BioUnique Boutique Collective, I help people use that information to create a personalized approach to food, supplements, and lifestyle.
