DIY Supplementation Is Risky Business. Here Is Why.

Hi, I’m Meg, owner of Harmony with Food. I’ve been a registered dietitian and functional nutritionist for over 20 years, and I was put on this earth to change the way you think about food.
Let’s get real for a minute. The supplement industry is booming—and with it comes a massive amount of misinformation. Every day I talk to people who are throwing money at supplements they saw on TikTok, heard about on a podcast, or picked up at a big box store. But here’s the truth:
DIY supplementation is dangerous.
If Big Pharma Wins, You Lose
Let me start by saying: If Big Pharma wins, you lose. These companies are betting on you staying sick, confused, and stuck in a cycle of meds, side effects, and guesswork.
Just look at the GLP-1 weight loss drugs flooding the market. They're causing blindness, muscle loss (cachexia), bone loss, and more. And yet, studies show the obesity drug market could reach $200 billion by 2031. You’re the guinea pig. They're cashing in.
But we don’t have to play their game. We can test—not guess—and take control of our health the right way.
Supplement Nutcase? You’re Not Alone
Do you have a cabinet full of supplements but no idea what’s actually working? Do you take a multivitamin, calcium, maybe some iron or zinc... but feel worse than ever?
You’re not alone.
I see it all the time—people spending hundreds of dollars on supplements every month, only to experience side effects, nutrient imbalances, or no improvement at all.
Listen: You wouldn't try to do your own dental work or legal paperwork, right? So why are you trying to play nutritionist?
Supplements Aren’t One-Size-Fits-All
You might have seen other shows or podcasts where they push one supplement after another without even knowing their audience’s age, health conditions, or current medications. That’s not how I roll.
I'm not going to sit here and push supplements on you without testing. I want to provide education, not a sales pitch. Because the truth is, certain supplements can be dangerous—especially if you're already on medications.
Take vitamin D, for example. It’s fat-soluble. Too much can lead to liver toxicity. Or magnesium—it interferes with heart medications and blood pressure meds. Then there’s the classic grapefruit interaction with statins and blood thinners. This stuff is real.
Drug-Nutrient Interactions You Should Know
Here are a few combos to absolutely avoid:
Zinc + Calcium: They compete for absorption.
Iron + Calcium: Calcium blocks iron absorption.
Magnesium + Zinc: They cancel each other out.
St. John's Wort + 5-HTP: Can dangerously spike serotonin.
Fish Oil + Ginkgo Biloba: Can thin the blood too much.
Without proper guidance, you could be doing more harm than good.
Test, Don’t Guess
You deserve to know exactly what food, drinks, and supplements are right for your body. That’s where my Bio Unique Boutique program comes in. We run testing for:
Micronutrient levels
Food sensitivities
The microbiome (your gut health)
Mold, toxins, and even genetics (Nutrigenomics)
Think of it as a custom roadmap for your body—no more guessing, no more wasting money on stuff that doesn't work.
