Why is it so expensive to be healthy?

This week on the Harmony with Food Radio Show I talked about why eating healthy is so expensive, the mindset shifts you need to make this year, and whether intermittent fasting works.

Why is eating healthy so expensive?

No matter what you make, we all have budgets and certain priorities. We need to have a mindset shift regarding food, what we are putting into our bodies, and the chemicals we are allowing to go into our bodies. The BPA in water bottles, chemicals in household products, and body care products like moisturizers and soap can all affect our microbiome.

However, food is the number one thing influencing our microbiome. Everything from diets, fasting, the foods we're consuming, and the balance of protein, carbohydrates, and fat that we eat alter the gut microbiota. The microbiome contains bacteria, fungi, viruses, and protozoa. The microbiome encodes over 3 million genes that produce thousands of metabolites that play an influential role in our health.

Considering how important it is, I actually don't think food is very expensive. We need to have a mindset shift and look at our bodies as a return on investment. Every time we consume food, we are either doing something good or bad for our bodies. So we need to look at food as an investment in our long-term health.

Does intermittent fasting work?

Intermittent fasting is one of the latest diet trends. The way it works is that you fast for a certain period of time each day, often up to 16 hours. Proponents of intermittent fasting say that it helps with weight loss, insulin resistance, inflammation, and heart and brain health.

However, Studies show that calorie restriction does lead to weight loss, but most of us can only maintain restriction for about 4 months. After that, we go back to our normal diet and wind up gaining more than we lost. That starts the dieting cycle and eventually you become weight loss resistant.

We know that the microbes in our microbiome also influence weight loss, and I've been seeing so many great results with my clients getting microbiome testing. We can work together to change your microbiome and get you off the dieting hamster wheel for good.

If you feel like you're already eating healthy and going to the gym, but you're still struggling with symptoms like fatigue, weight loss resistance, joint pain, headaches, etc. testing can help. Through my Biounique Boutique, I can test your microbiome to find out exactly what you should (or should not) be eating, and what micronutrients you may need.
